According to the American College of Obstetricians and gynecologists (ACOG),

• The doula  is a professional trained in childbirth who provides emotional, physical, and educational support to a mother who is expecting, is experiencing labor, or has recently given birth. Their purpose is to help women have a safe, memorable, and empowering birthing experience. 

According to a 2017 Cochrane Database Systematic Review, of "Continuous Support for Women during childbirth,"

•  “Continuous support in labor may improve a number of outcomes for both [the birthing person] and baby, and no adverse outcomes have been identified. Continuous support from a person who is present solely to provide support, is not a member of the [person’s] own network, is experienced in providing labor support, and has at least a modest amount of training (such as a doula), appears beneficial.”

• Meeting the ethical obligations of informed consent requires that an obstetrician–gynecologist gives the patient adequate, accurate, and understandable information and requires that the patient has the ability to understand and reason through this information and is free to ask questions and to make an intentional and voluntary choice, which may include refusal of care or treatment.

According to Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn: The Complete Guide (5th ed), the Midwifery model of care believes that the natural, though unpredictable, physiological aspects of birth and labor are highly sensitive and is an individualized life event that thrives on emotional support and  fewer interventions.

The medical model of care believes that pregnancy and birth are major medical events that require more hands-on work by the medical professional (i.e. the routine use of interventions)
